The Route

About this trip

My four years in Vancouver studying at Regent College are up and it’s time to head home to Cape Town, South Africa.

Each time I’ve flown this route I’ve wondered about all the things and places I’m missing as we cruise above the clouds at 30000ft... which got me thinking... what about taking some time on the way home to see all those interesting bits in between Vancouver and Cape Town?

To pull off a trip like this, a few key things need to be in place: time, a vehicle, someone to do this with, some money and a stubborn refusal to be put off by all the ‘what if’ questions...

The time element looks pretty good - I have about three and a half months between finishing my studies and starting a new job at Christ Church in Cape Town.

I also have someone to do this with - about a year ago I met Graham Hill who convinced me to get a used Kawasaki KLR 650. Over the following summer we did a whole bunch of rides in BC. It turns out that Graham is available for about ten weeks this summer too and is keen for an epic riding adventure.

So all the major elements seem to be in place - time, two KLR 650's, a friend to do the trip with, some savings and a homeloan to provide some funding, and that stubborn refusal to be put off by all the ‘what if’ questions.
